Alfred Bernheim

Alfred Bernheim (born July 11, 1885 in Tiengen ; died March 16, 1974 in Jerusalem ) was a German-Israeli photographer.

Life

Alfred Bernheim worked in the administration of the state palaces in Berlin and Potsdam. He married the artist and teacher Ilse Michalowski (1898–1953). Their children were the teacher Charlotte Schiller (1920–2009, died in the USA) and the mathematician Ernst Baruch Bernheim (1923–1948, died in Scotland). From 1920 he studied at the Pforzheim School of Applied Arts , became a designer of table lamps and worked as a sales representative. In 1931/32 he did an apprenticeship as a photographer with Walter Hege and in 1933 opened a studio for architectural photography and his own photography school in Berlin. In 1934 he emigrated to Palestine with his family . In Jerusalem he was a freelance architecture and portrait photographer and worked there with the architect Erich Mendelsohn, among others .

After 1955 he worked with Ricarda Schwerin (1912–1999), and they now ran the photo studio together. They portrayed numerous politicians and well-known personalities in the country, including Golda Meir , Mosche Dajan , David Ben-Gurion , James Baldwin , Martin Buber , Jitzchak Rabin , Heinrich Blücher and Hannah Arendt . In addition, they devoted themselves to architectural photography. In 1969 their joint photo book Jerusalem Rock of Ages was published . After Bernheim's death in 1974, Schwerin continued to run the photo studio for three years.
