Mordechai Narkiss (born December 28, 1898 in Skała , Russian Empire ; died March 26, 1957 in Jerusalem ) was an Israeli art historian.

Life

Narkiss studied literature and art history at the University of Krakow and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna . Narkiss immigrated to Palestine in 1920 , where he also changed his name to Narkiss . After studying at the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem, he took up a job there and became director of the museum in 1932 after the death of Boris Schatz . Narkiss was an expert in Jewish art and numismatics . The sister of his wife Frida named Esther married Jitzchaq Narkiss, the father of Uzi Narkiss , who is not related to Mordechai Narkiss. Frieda von Mordechai's son is Bezalel Narkiss , an Israeli art historian. In Jerusalem, a street leading to the Bezalel Academy is named after Mordechai Narkiss.

Narkiss was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in France in 1952.
