Alfred Coste-Floret

Alfred Coste-Floret (born April 9, 1911 in Montpellier , † January 9, 1990 in Paris ) was a French politician and lawyer. From 1946 to 1958 he was a member of the National Assembly and from 1984 to 1989 a member of the European Parliament . As a public prosecutor, he took part in the Nuremberg trials for France .

Early life and war

Coste-Floret was born in 1911 with his twin brother Paul Coste-Floret , who later also became a member of the National Assembly. As a member of a family of lawyers, Alfred studied law, received his doctorate in it and taught the subject in Strasbourg from 1938 . During the war, the University of Strasbourg was moved to Clermont-Ferrand and was considered a rallying point for the Resistance . In this way, Coste-Floret became a member of the Combat resistance group . After the liberation of France, he returned to Strasbourg, where he was involved in the restructuring of the city. At the Nuremberg Trials, which began in 1945, he was involved as a deputy public prosecutor and was particularly responsible for crimes affecting Alsace and Lorraine .

Political career

As a member of the Mouvement républicain populaire , Coste-Floret applied for a seat in parliament in the first regular parliamentary elections after the war in November 1946. In the Haute-Garonne department , he became a member of the National Assembly. In 1951 the MP, who was also elected Mayor of Bagnères-de-Luchon and a member of the General Council in the Haute-Garonne department, was re-elected as a Member. In 1956 he was re-elected again. He voted in 1958 for the Charles de Gaulle Enabling Act , which instituted the Fifth Republic . Although he was not represented again in the national parliament, he made it into the Second European Parliament in 1984 . He was represented there until 1989 and belonged to the group of the rallying movement of the European Democrats . He mainly dealt with European relations with Israel . In January 1990 he died a few months after leaving parliament.
