Alfred Hagens (born February 15, 1856 in Bremen ; † June 26, 1934 ) was Senate President at the Reichsgericht and chairman of the State Court for the Protection of the Republic.

Life

After attending grammar school in Bremen, he studied law in Strasbourg , Göttingen , Heidelberg and Berlin . Hagens received his doctorate in 1877 and was a lawyer in Bremen in 1878. In 1885 he changed sides in the courtroom and became a public prosecutor in Bremen. In the middle of the courtroom, he was promoted to magistrate in 1890. In 1896 he was appointed to the higher regional judge in Hamburg. In 1899 he came to the Reichsgericht as advice. From 1919 he was President of the Senate of the Second Civil Senate of the Reich Court . On September 1, 1922, he became chairman of the newly established State Court for the Protection of the Republic. According to him, the members were chosen on the basis of loyalty to the republic. He himself was a member of the DDP . Another aspect was his previous focus on civil law. There was no previous charge as a criminal lawyer.

“Some time after the Rathenau trial , President Hagens, who had only allowed himself to be persuaded to take up his office, asked for his dismissal. The man approaching the age limit longed for his civil senate back. The resistance of the colleagues at the Imperial Court, perhaps also the flood of threatening letters, had got on the nerves of the delicately disposed man. He made unfulfillable demands, e.g. B. on equality with the Reichsgerichtspräsident, and insisted on his resignation after their rejection. Hagens has undoubtedly earned services to the State Court, and what was forgotten in the trial by too paternal leniency, with the excellent reasons for the judgment. "

On December 31, 1923, he gave up the office again. In 1924 he retired.

family

His father Heinrich Hagens (1825–1866) was a businessman and married to Amalie von Heymann (1833–1893). Hagens married Anna Doris Pavenstedt (1861–) in 1886. The Bremen Higher Government Council Dr. Heinrich Hagens (1887–1950) and the Dresdner Bank banker Dr. Karl Hagens (1898–) were his sons.
