Alfred Congo (born September 27, jul. / 10. October  1906 greg. In Kanepi , †  31 December 1990 in Tartu ) was an Estonian painter. As an artist, Congo is particularly known for its atmospheric landscape and flower paintings as well as its still lifes ( oil , tempera and gouache ).

Life and art

Alfred Kongo studied from 1929 to 1940 at the Pallas Higher Art School in Tartu, South Estonia. His teachers were Villem Ormisson and Ado Vabbe . From 1946 to 1948 he worked at the State Art Institute in Tartu.

Because the Soviet authorities did not like his art, Congo was banned from exhibiting for ten years after World War II . It was not until 1958 that his pictures could be shown publicly again.

The first exhibition dedicated to the Congo was organized by the Tartu Art Museum in 1966/67 on his 60th birthday. From 1960 to 1986 Alfred Kongo was a lecturer at the Tartu Art School.

Awards

In 1977 Congo received the honorary title "Honored Artist of the Estonian SSR ". In 1985 he was awarded the Konrad Mägi Medal . A street in Tartu is named after him today.
