Alfred Kordelin

Alfred Kordelin (born November 6, 1868 in Rauma , † November 7, 1917 in Mommila , Hausjärvi ) was one of the most successful Finnish entrepreneurs before Finland's independence.

life and work

Alfred Kordelin was born the son of a Finnish-speaking seaman and grew up in poor conditions. He hardly received any formal education. Successful investments in the textile industry, in shipbuilding and in the metal processing industry made him very wealthy. Later he also worked as a shipowner .

At the end of his life, Alfred Kordelin had become one of the wealthiest entrepreneurs in Finland thanks to his economic instinct and his tireless creativity. He also made a name for himself as a patron of art and culture . His lawyer and advisor was the future Finnish President Risto Ryti .

Alfred Kordelin had the estates of Mommila, Jokioinen and Kultaranta built. The latter now serves as the summer residence of the Finnish President.

Kordelin's death

Kordelin was murdered in an ambush in the village of Mommila in Hausjärvi. A Russian sailor shot him dead when a group of Finnish soldiers tried to free him from his Russian kidnappers.

Alfred Kordelin Foundation

Kordelin remained unmarried in his life and left no children behind. He bequeathed his legacy to a Finnish cultural foundation founded in 1918 ( Alfred Kordelinin säätiö ), which to this day awards scholarships in the fields of literature, science, art and education.
