Alfred Lohmann

Frederik Alfred Lohmann (born April 2, 1870 in Bremen ; † September 4, 1919 in Timmendorfer Strand ) was a German merchant in Bremen.

biography

Lohmann traveled to Australia at a young age in 1891 on behalf of the Antwerp company Albert de Bary & Co. to organize direct wool purchases for some European worsted spinners and wool importers. In 1892, together with Arthur Weber, he founded the import and export company Weber, Lohmann & Co Ltd. in Sydney . Subsequently, branches opened in Brisbane , Melbourne and Western Australia. Imports of German goods were also expanded.

To anchor the Australian company in Europe, he founded the company Lohmann & Co in Bremen in 1901 . The Bremen businessman Georg Willhelm Waldthausen became a partner in this company with Oscar Plate in 1909, which developed into a respected national and international trading company.

From 1914 to 1915 Lohmann was President of the Bremen Chamber of Commerce .

During the First World War, Lohmann worked in the Reich Ministry of Economics and the Reich Treasury in 1915 to develop submarine traffic with merchant submarines in order to circumvent the British naval blockade . To this end, he, Norddeutsche Lloyd and Deutsche Bank founded the Deutsche Ozean-Reederei (DOR) in 1915 . The submarine Deutschland was able to successfully carry out two voyages under Captain Paul König in 1916 . In 1916, diving boat letters were also sent to the USA in this way.

After his death, the company suffered setbacks in World War II , but was able to resume and expand imports and exports under the leadership of Herbert Waldthausen from 1946. The wool trading company celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2001.

The Alfred Lohmann family grave is located next to the crematorium and the Rutenberg mausoleum in the Riensberg cemetery (grave number EE 361).
