Alfred Michael Watson

Alfred Michael Watson (born July 11, 1908 in Erie , Pennsylvania , † January 4, 1990 there ) was an American Roman Catholic clergyman. Watson was bishop of the Diocese of Erie .

Life

Alfred Michael Watson was born in Erie to Thomas and Catherine Watson. His father died in 1910 when Watson was two years old. He received his education at the Cathedral Preparatory School for Boys founded by Bishop John Mark Gannon in 1921 . In 1925 he was one of the first to graduate from the school. After his theological training, Watson was ordained a priest on May 10, 1934 in Erie . Watson became a chaplain at St. Peter Cathedral , he also taught at his alma mater , the Cathedral Preparatory School for Boys .

On May 17, 1965, Watson was appointed by Pope Paul VI. Appointed Auxiliary Bishop in Erie and Titular Bishop of Nationa . He was ordained bishop on June 29, 1965 by Archbishop and later Cardinal John Joseph Krol ; Co-consecrators were Bishops John Selby Spence and Joseph Francis Donnelly . Three years later, on December 28, 1968, John Francis Whealon , the Bishop of Erie, was named Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Hartford , succeeding Watson on March 17, 1969.

Watson was then a bishop for 13 years. When he suffered an accident in which his hip joint fractured and an operation compromised him, he had to request his resignation on July 16, 1982. Pope John Paul II accepted this . Watson then retired for eight years and died in early January 1990 at the age of 81.
