Alfred Ruetten

Alfred Rütten (born August 16,  1954 ) is a German sports scientist and university professor .

Life

Rütten studied sports science, social science and history at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen . From 1985 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Sports Science in Aachen, and in 1987 he completed his doctoral thesis. Rütten submitted his habilitation in sports science in 1992 at the University of Stuttgart  , where he was employed as a research assistant and university professor at the Institute for Sports Science from 1987 to 1994.

In 1993 and 1994 Rütten worked as a research professor at the University of Alabama in the United States , and in 1994 he took up a professorship for sports science (sports sociology and psychology) at the Technical University of Chemnitz . During his tenure in Chemnitz, Rütten went abroad in 1998 and was visiting professor at Yale University in the USA. In 2001 he followed the call to the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg , where he took over a professorship for sports science. In 2013 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Lithuanian Sports University in Kaunas . In 2014 and 2015, Rütten was visiting professor in the United States at the University of Hawaii and Stanford University . He held the chair at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg until September 30, 2018.

Rütten's research focuses on the areas of health promotion, physical activity in old age, in the context of physical activity and sociology. In 2015 and 2016, he headed the project "Creation of a scientifically sound sports psychological concept for the youth training center (NLZ) of 1. FC Nürnberg ". He also dealt with the development and implementation of political strategies to promote physical activity in individual countries, including Lithuania, Malta and Turkey, as well as with sports development planning, and in the latter area was active in an advisory capacity for state sports associations and state governments.

From 2003 to 2007 Rütten was a member of the board of the German Association for Sports Science .
