Alfred Senn

Alfred Senn (born March 19, 1899 in Blotzheim , † February 9, 1978 in Ashford (Connecticut) ) was a Swiss - American linguist .

Life

Alfred Senn was born in 1899 as the son of Alfred and Berta Senn. Affolter born in Blotzheim. His hometown was Bennwil . After completing school in Goldach and St. Gallen , he studied German and Indo-European in Freiburg from 1918 to 1921 . After receiving his doctorate, he completed his habilitation in 1922 at the University of Kaunas , where he then worked as a lecturer in comparative linguistics until 1930. In 1923 he married Maria Vedlugaite and emigrated to the USA in 1930. From 1931 to 1938 he was a full professor of German and Indo-European studies at the University of Wisconsin ; In 1936 he received US citizenship. From 1938 to 1969 he was a full professor for German studies at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia , where he also held the professorship for Slavic and Baltic studies from 1948 . His Handbook of the Lithuanian Language and the Little Lithuanian Language Teaching are considered standard works.

His son Alfred Erich Senn (1932-2016) was a professor of history at the University of Wisconsin.
