Alfred Wahl (historian)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alfred Wahl (* 1938 in Colmar ) is a French historian . His thematic focus is on contemporary history and the connections between football and society .

Wahl first worked at a Lycée in Haguenau before starting to teach at the Université Robert-Schuman in Strasbourg , where he had also studied. In 1980 he accepted a professorship at the Université Paul-Verlaine in Metz . In the course of his activity he mainly dealt with the French history of the 19th and German history of the 20th century. He has also published on these topics.

Another focus was added later, namely the role of sport (and particularly football) in modern society. Wahl himself found it “inadmissible and incomprehensible” that his colleagues did not consider this topic worthy of any research work. Even after his retirement (1993) he continued to research in this area and, in particular, together with Pierre Lanfranchi, published several fundamental works on the history of football and its development into professionalism. On the occasion of its 100th anniversary (2004), the world football association FIFA entrusted Alfred Wahl with the publication of a book together with Lanfranchi, the German Christiane Eisenberg and the Englishman Tony Mason and for the first time opened its archives to the authors.

Election is also politically active: the member of the Mouvement républicain et citoyen was the top candidate in the regional elections in 2004 in Alsace, a list combination of MRC, PRG and PCF and 3.74% of the votes cast.
