Alfred Wiedemann (Egyptologist)

Alfred Wiedemann (born July 18, 1856 in Berlin , † December 7, 1936 in Bad Godesberg ) was a German Egyptologist .

Wiedemann was the son of the physicist Gustav Heinrich Wiedemann and the younger brother of Eilhard Wiedemann , who also became a professor of physics. He was married since 1885 to Hedwig Finkelnburg (1863–1945), daughter of the Bonn psychiatry professor Carl Maria Finkelnburg . The couple had two children: Hans-Erich Wiedemann, killed in the First World War, and Gudrun, married Seitz.

After attending high school in Leipzig, Alfred Wiedemann studied Egyptology and ancient history at the universities of Leipzig , Berlin , Paris and Tübingen . On October 30, 1878 in Leipzig he was awarded Dr. phil. PhD. On October 27, 1882, he completed his habilitation at the University of Bonn and received the license to teach Egyptology and ancient oriental history. He was appointed associate professor on December 4, 1891, and full professor on July 26, 1920 . In 1924 he retired.

Wiedemann was also known as a local researcher. With financial support from the Association for Homeland Care and Local History Bad Godesberg, he wrote a standard work on the history of Godesberg. A street in the Godesberg district of Rüngsdorf was named after him.

Wiedemann was buried in the castle cemetery in Bad Godesberg .
