In 1996, Baş graduated from the Ahlen municipal high school and then studied English and social sciences to become a teacher (secondary level I and II) at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster until 2004 . During this time he was a member of the student parliament , the senate and the general student committee of the university and co-founder of the Democratic International List , a university group that promotes the democratic participation of foreign students in the committees of the student body. In 2005 he worked as a student editor at Semesterspiegel . In 2007 he finished his legal traineeship and worked as a teacher for English and social sciences at a vocational college until 2013 . In addition to his teaching activities, he is doing his doctorate at the Westphalian Wilhelms University, where he led seminars on the subject of “Muslim youth in Germany”. From 2009 to 2014, Baş was a member of the integration council of the city of Ahlen.

Political party

Baş has been a member of the Green Party since 2002 . Between 2007 and 2013 he was the spokesman for the Greens in the Warendorf district . He has been a member of the board of the district association again since 2017. In 2007 he co-founded the NRW Green Muslim Working Group (since 2016: State Working Group Green Muslims ) , the first association of green and green-minded Muslim politicians in Germany, of which he has been spokesman since then. From 2009 to 2014 he was a member of the Warendorf district council and deputy parliamentary group spokesman. In the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2010 , Baş was ranked 28th on the list and 32nd in the 2012 state elections . In both elections he ran in the Warendorf II state electoral district . On March 18, 2013, he moved into the 16th state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia for the outgoing Barbara Steffens . In the state parliament he was a member of the petitions committee, the committee for schools and further education, the committee for science and innovation, the budget control committee and the executive committee. In addition, Baş was also a deputy member of the Integration Committee. In the parliamentary group he was the spokesman for vocational training, teacher training, budgetary control and for interreligious dialogue with religious communities. In December 2016, Ali Baş was nominated by his parliamentary group as a member of the 16th Federal Assembly for the election of the 12th Federal President.

At the state delegates' conference of the GREEN NRW on September 24, 2016, Ali Baş was elected to 34th place on the list for the state elections in 2017, but was unable to win a new mandate as a member of the state parliament in the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2017 .

Positions

Baş advocates a dialogue with the various religious communities and advocates Islamic religious instruction in German by university-trained teachers as an important component in preventing religious radicalization. In addition, he calls for increased measures against increasing anti-Muslim racism and against anti-Semitism. Political education and civil society engagement must be further strengthened here.

Bas saw the lifting of the headscarf ban for teachers in schools in North Rhine-Westphalia as a signal against the discrimination against Muslim women in the labor market. Against the background of the "Imam spy affair", he criticized the crisis management of the largest German mosque association DITIB and the increasing influence of Ankara on around 900 communities. Bas described the incidents of aggressive anti-Christmas postings by individual communities on social networks as terrifying and the opposite of opening up. They are also a setback for those congregations that have been involved in interreligious dialogue for a long time.
