Ali Schamchani (also Ali Shamkhani , Persian علی شمخانی; * 1955 in Ahvaz , Chuzestan ) is an Iranian admiral and was Iranian Defense Minister from 1997 to 2005 . His successor was Mostafa Mohammad Najar . Shamchani belongs to the Arab- Iranian ethnic group and speaks fluent Arabic in addition to Farsi .

Life

Ali Schamchani studied Strategic Management at the Jondischapur University in Ahvaz . After the victory of the Islamic Revolution , he became a member of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard (Pasdaran) and in 1981 commander in the province of Khuzestan. During the Iran-Iraq war , Shamchani held several leading positions in the ground troops of the Revolutionary Guard and, after the end of the war in 1989, became the commander of the Pasdaran Navy .

Defense Minister

Ali Schamchani was appointed Defense Minister of Iran in 1997 and was part of the cabinet of reform-minded President Mohammad Chātami during this time . He held the post of Minister of Defense until August 24, 2005.

2001 presidential election

In the Iranian presidential elections in 2001 , Shamchani was admitted as a candidate by the Guardian Council and achieved third place in the elections with 2.7 percent of the vote.
