Mostafa Mohammad Najar ( Persian مصطفی محمدنجار, also called Mostafa Mohammad Najjar ; * 1956 in Tehran ) was Defense Minister of Iran from 2005 to 2009 , his predecessor in office was Ali Shamchani . Najar was Minister of the Interior of Iran from September 3, 2009 to August 3, 2013; he replaced Sadeq Mahsuli .

Life

Mostafa Najar graduated from KN Toosi University of Technology in 1977, has a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from Khajeh Nasir Toosi University of Technology (1984) and a Masters in Strategic Management from the University of Industrial Management (2004).

Since 1980 he has been a member of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and a veteran from the Iran-Iraq war . He was the commander of the Imam Ali garrison in Tehran , commander of the Revolutionary Guards in Lebanon and Strategic Director of the Revolutionary Guards for the Middle East ( Lebanon , Palestine and the Arab Gulf States ). Today, Najar is, among other things, director of Iranian arms production and a member of the Iranian Security Council . He is considered a Middle East expert and speaks fluent Arabic.

Connection to Hezbollah

Mostafa Mohammad Najar is said to have played a decisive role in the establishment of Hezbollah in Lebanon in the 1980s and during this time was the commander of the Pasdaran in Lebanon and the Hezbollah militias under them. He has meanwhile been linked to the planning of several suicide bombings carried out by Hezbollah in 1983 , including the 1983 attack on the US base in Beirut that killed 241 US Marines and the attack on the US embassy in Beirut, which left 63 dead , including 17 Americans.

Human rights violations

Due to the harsh and violent crackdown on protests following the Iranian presidential election in 2009 , Najar and other senior Iranian officials were placed on the US list for serious human rights violations in Iran. The fact sheet of the United States Department of the Treasury explains the following about Najar:

“As Deputy Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Mostafa Mohammad Najar was in charge of the police forces in November 2009 in order to maintain 'order and security'. He was responsible for the government's response to the protests on one of the holiest days in Shiite Islam, Ashura , which was celebrated on December 27 of 2009. The state media reported 37 deaths and the arrest of hundreds. "
