Alkathoos (son of Porthaon)

Alkathoos ( Greek  Ἀλκάθοος ) is in Greek mythology the son of Porthaon and Euryte , the daughter of Hippodamas . He was the brother of Oineus , Agrios , Melas and Leukopeus as well as the Sterope .

Alkathoos was killed by Tydeus , the son of Oineus and thus his nephew. According to a different tradition, he was killed as one of the suitors of Hippodameia by Oinomaos after he was defeated by Oinomaos in the chariot race for the hand of his daughter. He was therefore identified in antiquity with Taraxippos , a demonic figure who frightened the horses and charioteers in Olympia and brought them down.
