Alladi Ramakrishnan

Alladi Ramakrishnan (born August 9, 1923 in Madras , † June 7, 2008 in Gainesville (Florida) ) was an Indian theoretical physicist and mathematical statistician .

Life

He was the son of the lawyer Alladi Krishnaswami Iyer (1883-1953), the Advocate-General of Madras and judge at the Supreme Court of India and was instrumental in creating the constitution of India . His older brother Alladi Kuppuswami (* 1920) was Chief Justice at the Andhra Pradesh High Court .

Ramakrishnan graduated from Presidency College in Madras with a bachelor's degree in physics. Then worked with Homi Jehangir Bhabha at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and went to the University of Manchester in 1949 , where he received his doctorate in 1951 with MS Bartlett with a thesis on probability theory. In 1957/58 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study . This inspired him to set up a similar institute in India. After returning to Madras, he taught at the university and held private seminars at his family home. In 1962, with the support of Jawaharlal Nehru (and with a recommendation from Niels Bohr when he visited India), he founded the Institute of Mathematical Sciences in Madras (Chennai), which was attached to the Presidency College. At the opening, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar received an honorary professorship. He died while visiting his son Krishnaswami Alladi , who is a math professor at the University of Florida, in Florida.
