Allbirds is an American shoe manufacturer.

The company advertises its production with a high level of sustainability and its products as environmentally friendly .

history

Tim Brown , who during his sports career as vice-captain of the New Zealand national soccer team attended a commercial college and privately sewed leather shoes for friends, received a grant from the New Zealand wool industry in 2014 to develop a sneaker entirely from wool. He then advertised the project on Kickstarter.com and received $ 119,000 in five days. Together with Joey Zwillinger, who became aware of the project as an engineer for biotechnology and renewable raw materials, he founded Allbirds with the start of mass production of wool sneakers in March 2016. In the first year of production, ventures and financiers subsidized $ 7.25 million.

The first shoe produced by Allbirds is called Wool Runner, the upper material is made of merino wool .

In December 2017 there was a legal dispute due to optical similarities between the Wool Runners from Allbirds and a product from the US shoe company Steve Madden . As of 2017, the company had 50 employees at its headquarters in San Francisco, 40 additional employees in the shipping warehouse in Nashville and 350 employees in a shoe factory in South Korea. In March 2018, the production of footwear made from eucalyptus fibers began . In cooperation with Braskem , Allbirds developed flip-flops made of bio-based plastic obtained from sugar cane , which have been available in stores since August 2018.
