The All Saints Church (also Spitalkirche ; in Czech Kostel Všech svatých ) is the oldest church building in the city of Jáchymov (German Sankt Joachimsthal ) in the Karlovy Vary region in the Czech Republic . It was created between 1516 and 1520.

description

The single-nave hall church above the municipal cemetery is an externally white plastered half-timbered building with mighty, sloping supporting pillars and a shingle-covered gable roof with a small turret.

history

The building originally served as the parish church of the newly founded St. Joachimsthal and was built between 1516 and 1520 according to designs by an unknown architect on a slope southeast of the city center. The first service was held there as early as 1520. In the same year the church tower received a bell from the workshop of the local bell maker Hans Wildt and the interior of the church received an organ from the organists Blasius and Anton Lehmann from Bautzen. During the Reformation there preached a.o. a. Münzer , Karlstadt , Mathesius and Egranus . In 1530 a hospital building was built next to the church, which was connected to it by a surrounding wall. In addition, a cemetery was created below the church, which was later expanded several times. After the new dean's church was completed in 1540, the former parish church served as a hospital and cemetery church and served as a burial place for wealthy Joachimsthal citizens. The attic of the church was temporarily used as a granary.

In 1780 the hospital church was described as run down. In 1782 it was renewed and redesigned. To cover the high repair costs, it was decided to sell the metal tombstones. In the 18th century, the renovation of the neighboring hospital building in the Baroque style began . After the expulsion of the German population after 1945, the church was no longer maintained. On May 3, 1958, the church was listed as a monument in the State Register of Cultural Monuments . The associated former hospital building was demolished around 1958 and an urn grove was created in its place. In July 1964, renovation work began on the exterior of the dilapidated church. In the years 1967 to 1968 necessary repairs were carried out inside the church and some of the interior was restored. The picture epitaphs were transported to Prague for restoration. At the end of the 1980s the church was again in poor condition and threatened to collapse.

Between 1992 and 1993 the church was completely restored in two phases. The roof structure was statically secured, the roof covered with new shingles, the facade renewed and the church interior completely reconstructed. The cost was around CZK 3.5 million. Finally, the church got its original bell from 1520, which is considered to be the oldest movable monument in Jáchymov.

Furnishing

The furnishings include a winged altar donated by the mining captain Heinrich von Könneritz . Its main panel shows the “Mystical Engagement of St. Katharina ”from Lucas Cranach's workshop . It is part of an inconsistent reredos that depict the life of Mary. Originally the altar was decorated with baroque wooden sculptures of St. Joachim and St. Joseph, who used to stand on the predella. Carved angel heads in stylized clouds were attached to the corners of the polyptych and the first tower. The inscription on the baroque pedestal reads:

“To God his most dearest mother Maria, to the greater honor, than to the blessedly deceased Rosina Müllerin special memory, have your body behind, left two children Jacob Müller and Anna Rosina Maderin drilled miller to the altar these decorated statues and Zirathen of their own expense to a full / let komenhiet run. Good and velvet is that Obffer has died before them. 2. Machab. 12 In 1681 "

A 1544 resulting in the graveyard crucifixion of sandstone is the work of Dresden sculptor Christoph Walther I .
