The Alliance for Germany was an electoral alliance that came together on February 5, 1990 for the first and last free elections to the People's Chamber of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) on March 18, 1990.

The Christian Democratic Union (CDU-east) as former block party of the GDR and in turn time newly founded parties German Social Union (DSU), and Democratic Awakening (DA) formed into the right-center of the political spectrum located somewhere electoral coalition, the Alliance for Germany called has been.

The CDU (West) under the then Chairman and Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Helmut Kohl, played a major role in this merger . The German Forum Party originally took part in the negotiations ; this then joined the liberal party alliance Bund Free Democrats (BFD).

The Alliance for Germany advocated rapid German reunification and the restoration of the old countries as they had existed in the GDR until 1952. With 48.15% of the votes cast (CDU 40.9%; DSU 6.3%; DA 0.9%), Allianz clearly won the Volkskammer election for Germany and achieved 192 of 400 seats. Since there was no threshold clause , the result was not enough for an absolute majority and the Alliance for Germany formed a grand coalition with the Liberals ( BFD ) and the SPD-Ost . The prime candidate of the alliance Lothar de Maizière (CDU-Ost) became prime minister .

The chairman of the alliance member Democratic Awakening, Wolfgang Schnur , was exposed in March 1990, a few days before the election, as a longstanding IM of the Ministry for State Security (MfS). Despite his resignation on March 14, his party suffered a catastrophic loss of credibility and, as a result, a modest election result. It merged on August 4, 1990 with the CDU East, which in turn reunited with the West CDU on October 2, 1990 (one day before reunification ) . The DSU remained independent after the election on March 18, 1990.
