Allmogekor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Allmogekor (Allmoge cattle; singular Allmogeko [ a l m u ː ɡ ə k u ː ]) is a collective name for the old country cattle breeds of Sweden .

Races

There are (are) a number of old Allmogeko races . The official stud book keeper for most of them is the Föreningen Allmogekon, the Allmogeko association. However, she is currently concentrating on the conservation of three breeds and only keeps stud books for these:

Two distinct milk breeds, the Fjällko and the Rödkulla , are looked after by Svensk Mjölk , the Swedish professional association of dairy farmers.

The Swedish Samarbetsgruppe Lantrasforum (Community Landrace Forum) has on its red list all breeds of the Allmogeko in the highest risk category, "acutely threatened".

use

These cattle are resilient, healthy and self-sufficient and so ideally suited for extensive free-range husbandry in meadows and in sparse forests. They were used as two- to three-purpose breeds , ie as breeds that serve as draft animals , as milk and meat suppliers . In terms of profit maximization , they cannot compete with modern high- yield breeds . Their strengths lie in extensive pasture management and thus also in landscape maintenance grazing projects as well as in low-maintenance and frugal husbandry for non-farmers' own needs. In addition, they will be preserved as a living gene bank and, last but not least, as a valuable cultural asset .

Surname

The Swedish word "kor" (cows) is the plural form of "ko" (cow), "allemoge" is the peasant class . The name can therefore be translated as "farmer's cow", as "farmer's cow" or simply as "country cow".
