Alluaudia is a genus of plants ofthe Didiereaceae family within the order of the carnation-like (Caryophyllales). The botanical name of the genus honors the French politician and scholar François Alluaud (1778–1866).

description

Alluaudia species grow with a few emerging shoots, bushy or tree-shaped with a trunk up to 50 cm in diameter and reach heights of 10 to 15 m. The needle-like thorns stand individually on the shoots. Below the thorns, arranged in a spiral, a single, obovate or semicircular leaf appears on new shoots. At a later stage, two opposite leaves grow on short shoots each year, with their narrow side facing up.

The species Alluaudia dumosa deviates from this growth in that the reduced thorns and leaves are transient.

The large or small, cymous or gold-like inflorescences have white, pale green, yellow or reddish single flowers with a diameter of up to 1 cm. The 8 to 10 stamens are bent back and the 3 to 4 large stigma lobes are spreading. The fruits are 2 to 6 mm in size and contain seeds with aril .

distribution

The species of the genus are common in the south and southwest of Madagascar .
