Alma Adamkienė (born Alma Nutautaitė ; born February 10, 1927 in Šiauliai ) is the wife of the Lithuanian politician Valdas Adamkus and was first lady of Lithuania during his tenure as President .

Life

Nutautaitė was born as the daughter of the merchants Stasys Nutautas (1899–1977) and Ona Soblytė-Nutautienė (1904–2006). After the Red Army invaded Lithuania, the family fled. She completed her school education at a German grammar school and then studied philology at the University of Erlangen . In 1949 she moved to the United States and later also took on the US citizenship. At first she worked as a laboratory assistant in a steel works, later at an insurance company. She also provided humanitarian aid for Lithuanian emigrants.

In 1951 she married the natural scientist Valdas Adamkus. After his first appointment as president in the spring of 1998, Adamkienė took over the patronage of various social programs of the child welfare as first lady . In 1999, she founded a charity named after her.

A secondary school in the Upper Lithuanian village of Šepeta ( district of Kupiškis , Panevėžys district , Northern Lithuania) bears the name of Adamkienė.
