Songwriter / composer duo Jay Livingston and Ray Evans wrote the ballad Almost in Your Arms (Love Song from Houseboat) (the full title) for the film Hausboot (1958, directed by Melville Shavelson ), with Sophia Loren and Cary Grant in the main roles. In the film, the two danced to the song originally recorded for the film by Sam Cooke ; instead of this vocal version, however, an instrumental version was eventually used. The song then received an Oscar nomination in 1959 for the best song category . The first two lines of the song are: You're here, that moment's near, / I'm almost in your arms.

Cover versions of the song appeared from the early 1960s a. a. by Nancy Wilson / Jimmy Jones , Sam Cooke, Johnny Nash , Vera Lynn , Steve Allen , Dakota Staton , Michael Feinstein and Sinéad O'Connor . Only the version by Johnny Nash was able to place in the US Billboard charts and reached number 78.
