Aloo Pie is a fast food dish of Caribbean cuisine common in Trinidad and Tobago .

Description, manufacture and distribution

An aloo pie is a dumpling that is filled with spiced mashed potatoes and then fried. It is therefore similar to the samosas , but with a length of 10–15 cm it is significantly larger and has no basic triangular shape, but rather resembles a calzone . The dough consists of flour, water, salt, baking powder and, if necessary, a little saffron for the color. Salt, pepper, onions, cumin and garlic are used as spices and ingredients for the mashed potatoes , occasionally also green seasoning and long coriander . As a rule, the dumplings are cut open before serving and garnished with a curry based on chickpeas or green peas. It is seasoned with a chutney (mostly based on tamarind or mango) and a spicy sauce.

Aloo is Hindi and means potato , pie is English and means pate . From 1797 to 1962 Trinidad was a British colony, so English is spoken there. After the abolition of slavery in Trinidad, numerous Indians were recruited as cheap labor for the plantations from 1845 onwards, who in turn introduced curry dishes, which were often vegetarian and sometimes contained potatoes. The aloo pie symbolizes the cultural melting pot that most Caribbean countries represent. The pies are sold in snack bars, but also in bakeries and cafeterias in Trinidad. Aloo pies are often sold on the street by vendors who also have doubles on offer, as both dishes are deep-fried and can therefore be made with the same device.
