Aloysius Iyorgyer Katsina-Alu

Aloysius Iyorgyer Katsina-Alu (born August 28, 1941 in Ushongo , today Benue State , Nigeria ; † July 18, 2018 ) was a Nigerian judge and from 2009 to 2011 President of the Supreme Court of Nigeria (Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria) .

biography

After attending several primary schools and Mount St. Michael's Secondary School from 1956 to 1961, he first completed a course at the Nigerian Military Training College in Kaduna and then from 1962 to 1963 at the Mons Military Training College of Aldershot , Hampshire , England .

He then studied at the Ahmadu Bello University and then from 1964 to 1967 at the Inns of Court School of Law, at the Gibson & Weldeon College of Law and the School of Studies of the University of London law . After completing his studies, he was admitted to the bar in England in October 1967 . After his return, he completed postgraduate studies at the Nigerian Law School between 1967 and 1968 .

He then worked as a lawyer for a short time, but then switched to the civil service and was legal advisor at the port authority (Nigerian Ports Authority) of Lagos between 1969 and 1977 . In the meantime he acquired a diploma in Business English in 1972 . After a temporary renewed activity as a lawyer in Gboko , he was from 1978 to 1979 Attorney-General and judicial commissioner for the state of Benue.

He was then appointed in 1979 as a judge at the Benue State High Court of Justice in Makurdi . He held this post until his appointment as judge of the Nigerian Court of Appeal ( Court of Appeal ) held.

Since 1998, Katsina-Alu has been a judge at the Supreme Court of Nigeria (Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria). On December 30, 2009 he finally succeeded Idris Kutigi as President (Chief Justice).
