Vegetative characteristics

The alpine stonecrop is a bald, succulent , perennial plant that only reaches heights of 2 to 8 centimeters. It grows in loose lawns with densely leafy shoots and arching stems . The fleshy, succulent leaves are club-shaped and cylindrical and 3 to 6 mm long, are about 2 mm thick, they are often reddish, sitting unspired on the stem and alternate.

In little-flowered inflorescences sit, densely packed, short-stalked flowers. The hermaphrodite, radial symmetry , five-fold, yellow flowers have a diameter of 5 to 8 mm. The yellow petals are ovate and blunt and twice as long as the sepals . They have ten yellow stamens .

The flowering period extends from June to August.

The alpine stonecrop is diploid and the number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.

Distribution and location

The alpine stonecrop is found in the central Alps and the mountains of central and southern Europe.

Locations are acidic soils on moraines , rubble and snow valleys as well as pastures . It thrives in plant communities of the associations Androsacion alpinae or Salicion herbaceae.
