Alphonse d'Ornano

Alphonse d'Ornano (* 1548 in Bastelica ; † January 21, 1610 in Balagny ), knight of the royal orders, was a French military leader of Corsican descent. He became Marshal of France in 1595 .

Life

Alphonse was the eldest son of the Corsican freedom fighter Sampiero Corso , called Bastelica, and the Vanina d'Ornano. He was raised as enfant d'honneur at the court of Henry II of France , gave up the name Bastelica and took the name of his mother Ornano .

Under Henry III. he was Colonel General ( colonel général ) of the Corsicans and served the king with unswerving loyalty. After his death he was one of the first to support Henry IV and recognize him as the rightful king. In his service he allied himself with Lesdiguières and the Connétable Henri de Montmorency and brought Lyon , Grenoble and Valence under royal sovereignty. Because of these services, Henry IV appointed him on January 5, 1595 as a knight of the Holy Spirit ( chevalier de Saint Esprit ) and general governor of the Dauphiné. On September 6 of the same year he made him Marshal of France . In October 1597 he became governor general in the governorate of Guienne .

Alphonse d'Ornano died on January 21, 1610, at the age of 62, in Balagny . His body was brought to Bordeaux and buried in the church de la Mercy .

Alphonse d'Ornano married Marguerite Louise de Grasse in 1576, only daughter of Durand de Grasse, seigneur de Flassans. The marriage resulted in three daughters and four sons. The eldest, Jean-Baptiste , comte de Montlaur (1581-1626), also became Marshal of France in 1626.
