In 1801 the sexton house of the Reformed Church was built in the classicism style . It is the oldest school building in what is now Bremerhaven. Since the school system in Prussia was still in the care of the church, the sexton usually taught .

Lehe grew rapidly, so that in 1861 an extension was necessary for a second class. The two single-storey, clinkered buildings have a simple gable roof. The gable-facing sexton's house in simple rural construction and consists of brick masonry. The shape of the facade structure with older windows on the upper floor of the gable has a large hatch over the entrance door. The simple extension has been used as a gymnasium since 1886.

In 1886 the two-storey, classicistic and representative school building for eight classes was built in the school type of Prussian buildings. Two gable wings, each with four classes, were connected to one another by an intermediate building with a staircase and a teacher's apartment on the upper floor. The entrance porch was supported by sandstone pillars. The design was partly carried out using elaborate molded bricks or cornices and parapets developed from the masonry bond . The gables have blind niches and a rose window above them . The four decorative turrets at the gable ends no longer exist.

The three buildings form an ensemble of 19th century school architecture. In 1916 a drawing and handicraft room was installed in the attic. In 1949 an apartment was added to the top floor of the gym.

After the Second World War, the Zwingli elementary school was housed here. This school was later expanded to include a second location. Zwinglischule I and II were divided into two buildings on Langen and Brookstrasse. In 2005 the school on the Lange Strasse site was closed. After the rest of the Zwinglischule moved to its new location on Leher Markt, it has been called the Marktschule since 2007 .

Surname

The school was called the Reformed School until 1939, corresponding to the neighboring, formerly Reformed Church , the Old or Dionysius Church . Since 1939 it has been called the Alt-Leher School . In 1945 it became the Zwingli School, named after the reformer Ulrich Zwingli (1484–1531). The higher grades of the Am Leher Markt school have been housed there since 2016.
