Bardejov Old Synagogue (2019)

The Old Synagogue in the Slovak town of Bardejov was built in 1836. It was almost in ruins, but has been renovated in recent years.

Location and history

The synagogue is located on the site of the former Jewish suburb ( Židovské suburbium ). There are also the buildings of a yeshiva ( school for Torah studies , also called beit midrash ) and a Jewish bathhouse . These are currently (2019) used differently. There was also a Jewish slaughterhouse here.

The synagogue was built between 1829 and 1836. After the war, the main hall was used as a warehouse for a hardware store for many years. Renovations began in 2010 and were completed in 2017.

architecture

A mansard roof covers the rectangular building. The windows are in the baroque style . A neoclassical portico in the southwest corner with a staircase leading to the building collapsed in the 1960s.

The interior consists of the main hall (the men's prayer room), a vestibule and, to the west, the women's gallery.

The bima stood in the middle of the hall, at the corners of which four pillars support the vault. This divides the ceiling into nine fields. This style of the so-called nine-field synagogue first appeared in the Great Maharscha Synagogue in Ostroh and the Great Suburban Synagogue in Lviv .

In Slovakia today there is only the synagogue in Stupava , which shows this style.
