Old Oberkassel train station
The Old Station Oberkassel is a former train station - reception building at Belsenplatz in Düsseldorf district of Oberkassel . It is one of the architectural monuments of Oberkassel .
history
The Ober-Cassel station was opened on January 17, 1853 with the start of operations on the Mönchengladbach – Dusseldorf line of the Aachen-Neuss-Dusseldorf Railway Company . Another train station (Obercassel Rheinstation) was built around 1854 in Oberkassel on the Rhine meadows. As early as 1884, the line was shortened back to Obercassel station at today's Belsenplatz. The station building that still exists today was built there in 1896. The waiting room included the tower room, it was intended for first-class passengers. At the time of construction, the Prussian State Railways , which had since taken over the railway company, had four car classes .
1898 took Rhenish Railway Company (now Rheinbahn) its first electric tram line in operation, of Dusseldorf on Meerbusch to Krefeld leading K-Bahn . In 1901 the tram line followed from Düsseldorf to Neuss . Because of this competition, passenger traffic to Oberkassel station was discontinued in 1902. The waiting rooms of the reception building were converted into a restaurant. The investments of the head station Upper Cassel only served the freight. Only in the years after the Second World War was passenger traffic resumed at short notice. Freight traffic was stopped in 1972. The areas were then used by a timber trading company, among others. From 2010 residential buildings and the Belsenpark were built as a public parking area on the former station area, most of which had been fallow until then. In a second construction phase, further residential buildings as well as office and commercial buildings are to be built on the western part.
The station building with its gastronomy had two tenants until Josef Vossen from Oberlörick took it over in 1911. The station remained in family ownership for two more generations. The brothers Hans and Josef Vossen terminated the lease in 1988 for reasons of age. The German Federal Railroad as the owner wanted to sell the now dilapidated building to a condominium association, which wanted to set up offices there. After protests in 1991, Mohammad Rahbaran bought the building and invested seven million marks in the renovation.
Today (2018) the building houses a restaurant that has been operated by Jürgen Flohr and Klaus Unterwainig since 2007. Its own beer has been brewed since 2008.
