Old tower of the demolished Jakobuskirche

The old tower is a landmark of the Niederkassel district of Lülsdorf .

history

A church in Lülsdorf is mentioned in the Liber valoris around 1300. Parts of the tower date from the 11th or 12th century. In 1637 the building was thoroughly renovated, and the upper part of the tower also dates from this year. The church was laid down in 1880 after St. Jakobus was rebuilt. The Romanesque tower was preserved, and its bells continued to ring until 1890.

The tower was extensively restored in the 1980s and placed under monument protection. Today the building serves as a municipal gallery and event room in cooperation with the opposite city library in the old schoolhouse, which is also listed.

Building description

The three-storey square tower consists of irregular basalt , quarry stone and field stone masonry mixed with tufa and old bricks on the first floor, which is around five meters high . On the traditional west side there is the tower entrance door with a straight Romanesque lintel and a nailed wooden door with an inscription and the date 1637. Even in the old masonry there is a small circular window set in brickwork . An arched window is installed on the floor above. The two upper floors made of brick masonry are divided by two round-arched panels on each side and have round-arched windows below each a narrow notch window. The tower ends with a blunt pyramid roof , which is crowned with a weathercock .
