The old town hall of Neumünster is located in the Schleswig-Holstein city of Neumünster . It is located in the city center on Großflecken and has been a listed building since 1983. The building, built in the neo-Gothic style from 1898 to 1900 , was expanded several times with additions.

The neo-Gothic building

The eaves-facing building is integrated into the street, but stands out clearly from the neighboring buildings due to its height and rich structure. The middle section with the entrance loggia and pinnacle gable is framed by two oriel towers . The side gables are also decorated with steps and branches . The roof surface shows triangular ornaments, created by different colored glazed tiles. At the top, a tall, slender roof turret closes the building, which is only three meters lower than the Vicelinkirche .

Brick was used as a building material . By alternating glazed and unglazed stones as well as shaped stones , various kinds of ornaments were created. Mosaics have been added to the central gable and the upper floor parapets . They show the development of Neumünster from the founding of the monastery to an industrial city.

The interior council chamber is bathed in subdued light through stained glass windows . A vault-like wooden ceiling over an ogival wooden frieze closes the hall off at the top.

Building history

The neo-Gothic town hall, built from 1898–1900 on the foundations of a previous classical building, was designed by the architect Magnus Schlichting . It should express the self-confidence of the up-and-coming industrial city. After a few decades, the premises were no longer sufficient and several extensions were made.

South extension from 1939
  • In 1928 the town house was built behind the town hall according to the plans of city building officer Carl Lembke.
  • In 1939 there was a low extension on the south gable. The architect Fritz W. Hain designed it in a historicist style, but in simple forms.
  • In 1977 the administrative center was expanded with spacious, modern extensions. They were built according to the plans of the architects Dissing and Weitling from Copenhagen.
