The old town hall of Boppard is the former town hall of the city. The building is now a listed building . After the city administration moved away in 1976, city council meetings are still held there.

location

The old town hall of Boppard is located on the market square opposite the St. Severus Church . It stands on the corner between Obermarkt and Untermarkt and bears the address Markt 17.

history

A town hall has been handed down in Boppard since 1380. In 1749, a new building was built between the market square and what was then the churchyard (former cemetery) according to plans by Thomas Neurohr , who previously directed the reconstruction of the Marienberg monastery . This baroque town hall was rebuilt in 1854 and a new flight of stairs was laid out. In 1855 the market fountain was built in front of the town hall on the upper market square, today it is on the lower market square.

After a fire in 1884, the town hall was rebuilt at a location further south according to plans by Paul Rowald , which resulted in today's L-shaped section of the market square. The new building was completed in 1885 in the neo-renaissance style . Changes were made to the portal in 1933.

With the re-establishment of the association-free city of Boppard in 1975, the town hall became too small and the city administration moved into the former Carmelite monastery . Thereafter, among other things, the senior meeting place St. Severus was housed in the old town hall, which is sponsored by the Catholic parish of St. Severus, the local St. Vincent Conference and the local Caritas Association. In 2010 it moved to the town hall. In the same year, as part of renovation work, an elevator system for barrier-free access was installed.

Todays use

The historic town hall hall is located on the first floor; this is where the city council meetings of the Boppard city council and the meetings of the local council of the Boppard district are held. The tourist information is also located on the ground floor of the building. After the St. Severus senior citizens' meeting place moved away, the Boppard table was placed in the basement . The offices of the public order office are on the second floor .

The parish church of St. Severus has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley since 2002 . In addition, it is protected as a registered cultural monument within the meaning of the Monument Protection and Maintenance Act (DSchG) of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
