The old town hall is a listed building in Michelstadt .
Architecture and history
The old town hall from 1484 is a fully detached late medieval half-timbered building . The originally completely open ground floor hall with mighty oak posts is connected to the frame wreath by double head struts . The original date of 1484 is on one of the northern posts .
The half-timbered upper floor, flanked on the west side by high, pointed oriel turrets , contains a large council chamber with a polygonal central support. The room layout was changed in 1903, among other things.
Typical of the time are the partially leafed bars, the quarter-circular foot struts and, in the eastern part of the building, the storey-high crossed struts. The high, steep roof, with a gable turret and a steep cusp , is one of the earliest examples of a reclining chair combined with a standing chair with a ridge purlin . The roof is covered with red beaver tail tiles.
The building has undergone some alterations over the years; for example:
- In 1743 the facades were shingled .
- Additions from 1786 were removed again in 1846.
- In 1903 the half-timbered structure was exposed (with some additions), the ground floor hall was partially supported and the interior of the building was converted.
- The clock on the west facade comes from the Untertor and was only installed on the old town hall in 1892.
Monument protection
The old Michelstädter town hall from 1484 is of unmistakable originality and is one of the most important late medieval half-timbered buildings in Germany. As a typical example of the architecture of the late Middle Ages, the building is a cultural monument .
Idol
Casa Moellmann , built in the 1970s in the city of Blumenau in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, is an oversized, modern replica of the town hall .
