The old registry office in Schwerin is located on Pfaffenteich in August-Bebel-Straße 29 in the Schelfstadt district . The building according to the designs of the Schwerin architect Gustav Hamann was completed in 1894. At first the building was the seat of the Kuetemeyer Foundation .

The Foundation

Johann Hermann Kuetemeyer (* June 24, 1769; † July 31, 1854), Schwerin mayor, councilor and lawyer, founded his foundation in 1849. It was first after him and later supplemented by the maiden names of his two wives - Schencke and Steinicke - named. The foundation only came into effect after Kuetemeyer's death. People in need in the city could borrow small amounts of money without interest. But also craftsmen and traders who wanted to start their own business could get interest-free loans.

At the time of its establishment, the foundation had 226 members and total assets of 314,580 marks. The construction costs were put at 95,000 marks. 15 personalities from the city of Schwerin belonged to the foundation council.

Building history

The building, which was erected for the 50th anniversary of the foundation, initially stood alone on Pfaffenteich and was surrounded by several gardens. It is considered a masterpiece by the architect Gustav Hamann from Hagenow . In Johann-Albrecht-style designed decorate forms of Mecklenburg Renaissance facade. The clinker building is lavishly covered with characteristic terracotta tiles . They came from the grand ducal art brickworks on Kläterberg near Schwerin. Models for his designs were the lakeside of the Schwerin Castle , the Prince's Court in Wismar and the Castle in Gadebusch . The windows are decorated with triangular gables and lunettes. The attic is crowned by vases and obelisks. The first floor is characterized by five large three-lane windows. These were originally surrounded by a rich design of the wall in sgraffito technique, which was destroyed in an earlier renovation and could not be restored during the most recent renovation of the house.

Usage history

From 1894 to 1941, the Kuetemeyersche Foundation had its administrative headquarters at number 29 in 1906 was the participation of the Society for dissemination of public education that the Lehnrat Kütemeyer-Schencke-Steinicke Foundation Public Library founded and housed in the Foundation House. It was the first public library in Schwerin and existed until the foundation was dissolved.

In 1941 the National Socialists dissolved the foundation. Your fortune went to the city of Schwerin. On June 8, 1942, the registry office moved into the house of the Kuetemeyer-Schencke-Steinicke Foundation by a resolution of the city council - from 1939 to 1950 August-Bebel-Strasse was still called Krügerstrasse. Until 2008, numerous people from Schwerin celebrated their marriages here.

In 2010 the city of Schwerin sold the building to Martin Henning Bischoff after it had been vacant for a long time. The new owner had the building extensively renovated from 2010 to summer 2015. The terracottas in particular presented him with a challenge. They had to be restored by hand.
