The old armory in Rapperswil , a district of the Swiss municipality of Rapperswil-Jona in the canton of St. Gallen , was built in 1862 as an armory .

location

The Altes Zeughaus building complex is located outside of the old town of Rapperswil on Neue Jonastrasse 72 in the direction of Jona and on the seaward Schönbodenstrasse.

Building history

In contrast to other walled medieval cities in Switzerland, the city of Rapperswil never had a central armory . Until the dissolution of the Ancien Régime in 1798, two  master craftsmen were responsible for the arsenal of armaments, weapons, ammunition and tools, stored in the armory of the castle and on the ground floor of the town hall . With the Federal Constitution of 1848 , the supreme supervision of the defense system was transferred to the Federal Military Department . The military department chose Rapperswil as one of the decentralized locations for a federal armory with an ammunition magazine.

The building complex was built between 1861 and 1862 by master builder Friedrich Straub, based on a design by engineer and staff major Hans Kindlimann, in a Florentine neo-renaissance style, with extensions in 1905. After the armory in Rapperswil was closed, the property was rebuilt in 1998 and from 2001 newly used. A Schindler bunker at the entrance to the site reminds of the former military use.

Art (stuff) house

In May 2008 the art (stuff) house was opened in the main building. The Peter and Elisabeth Bosshard Collection forms the focus of around five thousand exhibits of Swiss contemporary art , with public tours and workshops for school classes as well as temporary exhibitions . The side building is used as office space and a restaurant.
