Alton is a small market town in the District East Hampshire in the northeast of the county Hampshire . In 1991 it had 16,584 inhabitants.

geography

Alton is 14 km southwest of Farnham and 16 miles northeast of Winchester . London is 84 km northeast. The River Wey , which flows into the Thames , has its origin near the city .

history

Alton was the scene of numerous events of supraregional importance. In 1001 a Danish invasion led to the first battle of Alton , which the Danes won.

The Treaty of Alton of 1101 was an agreement between King Henry I of England and his older brother Robert II Curthose, the Duke of Normandy. In this agreement, Duke Robert recognized Henry as King of England. In return, Robert received annual cash benefits and other concessions from Heinrich.

In 1643 the Battle of Alton took place in the English Civil War . Over 700 royalists were captured. The impact holes can still be seen in the church today.

Town twinning

Alton's twin towns are Montecchio Maggiore in the Italian region of Veneto (since 1998) and Pertuis in the French department of Vaucluse (since 2006).
