Alvierweihe

In the newspaper Oberländer Anzeiger of August 4, 1876, the following message appeared with the title "The Alvier Consecration on July 30, 1876":

«At their spring meeting, the" Alvier "section in Buchs decided to inaugurate the club hut and paths on the Alvier, built in autumn 1875, with a simple celebration. The neighboring sections of St. Gallen, Toggenburg, Sentis, Chur, Glarus and Zurich from Switzerland were invited. Alpenclub and the Vorarlberg Section of the German-Austrian Alpine Club and one could probably expect that the fun-loving population of the St. Gallen Oberland would also take part in this, up to then the only festival. And the expectation was not disappointed! After the sky was more and more cleared of clouds and fog on Saturday, despite Parisian rain dispatches, a small migration of peoples towards the "Alvier" took place in the evening; While we climbed the extremely comfortable path from Oberschan to Palfries and from there in a steady zigzag effortlessly up towards the famous "chimney", the joyous shouts of sprightly alpine walkers, with women and daughters, could be heard from everywhere from the depths and from the heights Brides and girlfriends marched up to the alpine huts and the peaks.

The moon lit up the picturesque rock faces of la Gauschla magically; and after one had happily passed the dark throat of the "chimney" on solid rock stairs, the eye suddenly saw the dazzling white snow fields on the east side of the mountain, which clung to the gloomy colossus like fragrant night robes. We arrived at the hut at half past ten; the section president introduced the highly esteemed vice-president of the Central Committee of the SAC, Mr. Binet-Hentsch, 66, from Geneva, to the clubists present; The old, friendly gentleman was greeted with stormy acclamation and well-chosen French, and he returned the greeting with French liveliness and courtesy. - At 11 o'clock the Bengali lighting of the hut took place under the thunder of cannons, the star-blazing rocket signals were answered by Buchs-Sevelen and a large fire in the area of Ragaz had already sent its flaming greeting to our summit earlier. - After the mountain petrol cooker donated by the St. Gallen Section to the Alvier Section had delivered a tasty flour soup and this was thoroughly washed down with honorary wine, they lay down on the hay store, but of course there was little talk of sleep. As in Noah's Ark, everything was jumbled up here in the club hut; while there is room for 30–50 people, from 75 to 100 counted heads stayed in it; it had to be evacuated several times in order to provide shelter for those standing outside, half frozen.

A wonderful morning made up for the frosty night; In a cloudless sky behind the Tyrolean mountains the young star of the day rose up, solemnly greeted by the mighty chords of the Swiss psalm: "Step forward in the morning red," performed by music and the male choir of Buchs. Now an extraordinarily lively and picturesque life unfolded on the Alvier; every ray of sunshine seemed to attract new visitors, little by little a crowd of 500-600 people covered the summit and everywhere you met pretty groups lying happily in the fragrant grass. Golden and silver goblets with the fiery wine of honor circled among the distinguished guests; alternately the music, the excellent male choir Buchs and the mixed choir Azmoos with their silver voices delighted the audience; even a "dancing bear" got lost in this almost 8000΄ height and was doing his clumsy arts with the Alpstock.

After the air and the ground and the people had been properly warmed up, the music collection played with the welcoming speech, which, with many other golden words, with singing and music, turned into a solemn field service. Opposite the hut, a small platform was built from stone slabs and covered with the most beautiful alpine flowers. From here, after the always ready Buchs male choir performed a chorale-like song, the president of the "Alvier" section, Mr. Pastor H. Hirzel von Wartau, the welcome and consecration speech, which we follow according to its wording. [Etc.]"
