Alvin Colt (born July 5, 1916 in Louisville , Kentucky , † May 4, 2008 in New York City , New York ) was an American costume designer . He worked on Broadway for over 60 years and designed the costumes for over 50 plays. Colt has received multiple awards.

Life

Alvin Colt lost his parents at a young age and grew up with his brother. He studied design at Yale but never got his bachelor's degree . After dropping out of college, he moved to New York City, where he initially worked for a number of theater and ballet companies . There he discovered his preferences for costumes. Alvin Colt's first work in this area was for the musical On the Town , which was also Leonard Bernstein's debut .

He won the American Tony Award in 1955 for the musical Pipe Dream . He has also been nominated for the award several times. He also became known for his costumes for the Forbidden Broadway revue , which ran for 15 years.

Although he mostly worked for the theater, some television productions appeared with his costumes. Among other things, he designed the dresses for the 1976 series The Addams Family .

Most recently in 2001 he worked on the costumes for If you ever leave me… I'm going with you! . In the same year he was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame .
