Alvin Rulon Dyer (born January 1, 1903 in Salt Lake City , Utah ; † March 6, 1977 ibid) was an Apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held various church offices as such.

Life

Dyer grew up in a family with 13 children. He attended West High School in Salt Lake City. From 1922 to 1924 he was a missionary in the Eastern States Mission . Upon returning to Utah, Dyer, who had been a talented baseball player through high school , was given the opportunity to pursue a professional baseball career. However, he refused to continue to be active in the church. Dyer took courses in mechanical engineering and worked in the air conditioning business. Among other things, he was manager of the relevant department of Utah Builders Supply from 1934 to 1949 and then founded his own company. He later became head of his church's Central States Mission . In October 1958, he was called to serve as Assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles . He remained so until his calling to be an Apostle of Latter-day Saints Church of Jesus Christ in October 1967. In April 1968, he was called by President David O. McKay to serve as a counselor to the First Presidency. When the First Presidency dissolved with McKay's death in 1970, Dyer was again assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. In October 1976 that office was abolished and Dyer became a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy.

Dyer was married with two children, a son and a daughter.
