Alvydas Nikžentaitis (born October 18, 1961 in Panemunė (Übermemel), Lithuanian SSR ) is a Lithuanian historian and cultural scientist.

Life

1979–1984 Nikžentaitis studied history at the University of Vilnius . 1984–1992 he was a research associate at the Lithuanian Historical Institute. In 1989 he received his doctorate there under Edvardas Gudavičius . In 1992, together with Vladas Žulkus, he established the Research Center for the History of Western Lithuania and Prussia at the University of Klaipėda / Memel, which was reorganized in 2003 into the Institute for the History and Archeology of the Baltic Sea Region. 1992–1993 Nikžentaitis was the first director of the center. In 1993 he was appointed the first holder of the newly established Chair of History at the University of Klaipėda. From 1998 to 2000 he was a scholarship holder at the Herder Institute . In 1999 he completed his habilitation with "The Lithuanian Society of the Pre-Christian Period (13th-14th Century)". In 2000 he was appointed director of the Lithuanian Historical Institute. He served two terms until 2008. Until 2004, Nikžentaitis was also a research assistant at the Institute for History and Archeology of the Baltic Sea Region. Until 2009 he was professor of Lithuanian history at Vilnius Pedagogical University . From 2009-2010 he was a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the humanities center “History and Culture of East Central Europe” at the University of Leipzig . Nikžentaitis has been the project coordinator and research assistant at the Lithuanian Historical Institute since 2009.

1999–2008 Nikžentaitis was a member of the scientific advisory board of the German Historical Institute in Warsaw. Since 2004 he has been chairman of the Lithuanian Historians Association, since 2005 board member of the Lithuanian-German Forum and since 2006 chairman of the Lithuanian-Russian historians commission. He is also co-editor of the journal for East Central Europe research .

Nikžentaitis focuses on the recent history of East Central Europe. He primarily conducts research on the subject of the history of enemy images in the Baltic Sea region, cultural memory , cultures of remembrance in East Central Europe , historical politics, identity change and the symbolic appropriation of cities.
