Amélia Christinat (born February 6, 1926 in Corticiasca , Ticino ; † September 7, 2016 in Geneva ) was a Swiss National Councilor ( SP ) and women's rights activist .

Life

Amélia Christinat was born on February 6, 1926 in Corticiasca in the canton of Ticino. She grew up in poor circumstances and is the daughter of the boiler maker Eugenio Petralli and the mountain farmer Maria-Maddalena Minuzzi. She trained as a seamstress at the Lugano vocational school . She then worked for the sewing machine manufacturer Tavaro and later as an officer in the post office .

In October 1949 she married Emile Christinat. Their daughter Nadia was born in 1955. Emile died in 1994.

Amélia Christinat died of a stroke on September 7, 2016 at the age of 90.

Career

In 1961 Amélia Christinat became a member of the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland (SP). In 1967 she joined the municipal council of the city ​​of Geneva and two years later the Grand Council of the Canton of Geneva . On January 16, 1978, she was one of the first women to be elected to the National Council, the first female social democrat in the canton of Geneva. Amélia Christinat was a national councilor until November 29, 1987.

She campaigned for women's suffrage at an early age . She also fought at the national level for maternity insurance and for greater representation of women in parliaments. Christinat had to wait until she was 45 before she could vote in the national elections. Her passion earned her the nickname “la pasionaria” in her party. Along with Yvette Jaggi , she founded the consumer organization Fédération Romande of consommatrices , 1996 renamed Fédération Romande des consommateurs .
