Amarnath Amarasingam

Amarnath Amarasingam is a Canadian extremism researcher at the Center for Cyber ​​and Homeland Security at George Washington University , the London Institute for Strategic Dialogue and the University of Waterloo .

Career

Amarasingam studied 2007-2011 Religion and Culture at Wilfrid Laurier University and was 2013 in Lorne L. Dawson with a dissertation on activism of social movements for Ph.D. PhD. Since September 2011 he has been a lecturer at Wilfrid Laurier University, and since January 2012 at the University of Waterloo. From May 2014 to May 2016 he conducted research as a postdoctoral fellow at Dalhousie University with a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) . He is a Senior Research Fellow at the London Institute for Strategic Dialogue , a Fellow in the Extremism Program of the Center for Cyber ​​and Homeland Security at George Washington University and has been leading a study on Western foreign fighters at the University of Waterloo since January 2017.

Amarasingam is the author of several peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, has lectured at over 100 national and international conferences and for The New York Times , Politico , The Atlantic , VICE News , The Daily Beast , Foreign Affairs , The Huffington Post , Al Jazeera and "War on the Rocks" written. In 2016 he was involved in the TV documentary "ISIS: Rise of Terror".

As a field researcher , Amarasingam conducted hundreds of interviews in the Tamil diaspora of Sri Lanka for his dissertation on social movement activism, organizational dynamics and youth identity . In 2013 and 2014 more than 50 interviews with former fighters of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the former war zones of Sri Lanka were made. He also conducted field research in Somalia , Lebanon and Israel / Palestine . For his project on western foreign fighters, he spoke to dozens of injured fighters, refugees and activists of the Syrian revolution . He conducted numerous interviews through social media and personally with jihadists such as Rachid Kassim who are currently fighting in Syria and Iraq , as well as those closest to them.

His research interests lie in diaspora politics, post-war reconstruction, surveillance , social movements, radicalization and terrorism , media studies and the sociology of religion.
