Amazonspinther dalmata is a freshwater fish from the family of the true tetras (Characidae) in the catchment area of the Rio Purus and the Rio Madeira in the Brazilian Amazon.

features

The species becomes only 2 cm long and has a slender, elongated body with a long tail stalk that takes up 27 to 30% of the standard length. It is almost transparent and the spine and swim bladder are clearly visible. It can be easily distinguished from all other tetra species by means of a black spot each on the base of the dorsal, anal and caudal fin. That is why the specific epithet dalmata was chosen, which refers to the spotted dog breed of the Dalmatians (Port. Dálmata). Another characteristic that is not found in any other species of tetra is the anterior fin ray of the anal fin, which extends between the twelfth and fourteenth abdominal ribs into the abdominal cavity. Hemal spines are present in one, two, and sometimes three rear caudal vertebrae. They articulate directly with the ventral (ventral) pre-rays of the caudal fin. The dorsal and anal fins are each supported by eleven fin rays.

habitat

Amazon Spinther dalmata has previously been caught in waters with slowly flowing, cloudy or clear water. The bottom of the water was muddy or sandy and there was abundant riparian and underwater vegetation. Accompanying fish are Axelrodia lindeae , iguanodectes spp., Microschemobrycon geisleri , Tyttocharax madeirae , Gnathocharax steindachneri , Phenacogaster beni , Hemigrammus sp., Knodus sp., Aphanes Odontocharacidium , Elachocharax pulcher , Ammocryptocharax elegans and Microcharacidium sp.

Systematics

The species and genus were described in 2008 by the American ichthyologist Stanley H. Weitzman and colleagues and assigned to the subfamily Cheirodontinae within the family of the true tetras (Characidae). A phylogenetic analysis of the Characidae later revealed that the Amazon Spinther, together with the genus Spintherobolus, is basal to most other tetras. The subfamily Spintherobolinae with the genera Amazonspinther , Atopomesus and Spintherobolus was introduced in mid-2018 .
