Ambatondrazaka is a city in eastern Madagascar . The place is about 150 kilometers from the capital Antananarivo .
The city is located south of Lake Alaotra in a hilly landscape. It is the administrative center of the Alaotra-Mangoro region and the commercial center of the region. Ambatondrazaka has its own airfield two kilometers north of the city.
The population grew from 18,044 (1975) to 27,711 (1993) residents. Today's estimates vary widely. The city probably has around 50,000 inhabitants. The locals belong to the Sihanaka and Tsimihety families . However, many Sakalava and Betsimisaraka immigrated from the west and east coast respectively .
The railway line to the capital is currently not in operation, but should be repaired again.

Since 1959 the city has been the seat of a Catholic bishop and is the seat of the Diocese of Ambatondrazaka .
