Ameen Muhammad

Ameen Muhammad (born July 12, 1954 in Clarksdale , Mississippi as Curtis Chapman , † February 27, 2003 in Chicago ) was an American jazz musician ( trumpeter , percussion, shells ), music educator and composer who worked in the area of ​​the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in Chicago.

Ameen Muhammad grew up in the tradition of African American culture and grew up in Chicago from the age of seven. After studying electronics at Wright Junior College , he worked for two decades as a musician and composer in the New Horizons Ensemble of his childhood friend Ernest Dawkins , on his 1990s albums such as South Side Street Songs , Chicago Now (on Silkheart ) and Jo'burg Jump and Cape Town Shuffle on Delmark he can be heard. He also played in Edward Wilkerson's Shadow Vignettes and with his own formation, Ameen Muhammad and Chicago 3D , with whom he performed in the USA, Europe and Japan, as well as with bassist Yosef Ben-Israel and saxophonist Mwata Bowden . Muhammad was also active as a music teacher and developed the educational program The Hip Trip , which was performed in the state of Illinois in front of more than ten thousand people and which reflects the history of African American people in the tradition of Great Black Music . Muhammad died of a heart attack at the age of 48 . In his honor, Ernest Dawkins released the album Mean Ameen in 2004
