The American University of the Caribbean, School of Medicine (AUC), founded in 1978, is a private, profit-oriented university of Adtalem Global Education Inc. The campus is located on the 92 km² Caribbean island of St. Martin . The administration is located in Pembroke Pines (Florida).

history

The AUC was founded in 1978 by the emigrant Paul Shu-Pei Tien, who was born in Tianjin ( People's Republic of China ) and grew up in Taiwan , out of the conviction of the “need for sensitive, capable and visionary medical professionals”. The campus at that time was on the Caribbean island of Montserrat . The 17 buildings were devastated by Hurricane Hugo on September 17, 1989 , but a month later classes were resumed in a makeshift facility in Plainview, Texas , for the one-year period of reconstruction .

A volcanic eruption on July 18, 1995 made it necessary to move to the island of St. Martin , but the buildings are already being hit by hurricanes during the construction phase. In 2011 the AUC was bought by the DeVyr Educational Group , two years later Heidi Chumley took up her position as executive dean and chief medical officer .

education

After completing the first five semesters, medical students have to complete their clinical training for another 4.5 semesters in teaching hospitals in the USA , Canada , Great Britain or Ireland . In addition to 42 weeks in the compulsory disciplines of internal medicine , surgery , pediatrics , psychiatry and gynecology, this also includes 30 weeks in special fields of your choice. After four years, it is then possible to award a doctorate.

meaning

According to their own information, the 6,900 graduates are now practicing in all 50 US states as well as Canada and other parts of the world, despite some legal difficulties in obtaining admission .
