The American lotus flower ( Nelumbo lutea ) forms together with the Indian lotus ( Nelumbo nucifera ) the plant genus lotus flowers ( Nelumbo ) within the monogeneric family of the lotus plants (Nelumbonaceae).
features
The American lotus flower is a perennial, herbaceous water plant with rhizomes . The 2 m or more long stalked leaves are peltat. The round leaf blade has a diameter of 50 to 80 cm.
The hermaphrodite flowers have a diameter of up to 25 cm and are 1 to 1.5 m above the water. The many bright yellow bracts are 1 to 13 cm long; the outermost one to five remain for a long time. The anthers are 1 to 2 cm long. There are many free carpels . The pollination is done by beetles.
The more or less spherical fruit has a size of 10 to 16 × 8 to 13 mm.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.
Occurrence
The American lotus flower is found in the eastern United States .
