Amherst State Park is a 80 acre (32 ha ) great State Park in the municipality of Williamsville and Amherst in Erie County , New York , United States. The park is northeast of Buffalo and the park area extends roughly equally across the parishes of Williamsville and Amherst. The park is administered by the Town of Amherst by virtue of an arrangement with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation . Originally there was a monastery on the site.

history

The property was formerly part of the convent of St. Mary of the Angels , a Franciscan community of the Third Order (Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities - OSF, founded 1861), which had existed there since 1923. The convent was sold in 1999.

The property was acquired by the Town of Amherst and New York State in 2000 after both parties raised the $ 5 million. had divided. New York State now owns 77 acres (31 hectares) while the Town of Amherst owns the remaining 3 acres. The agreement stipulates that the community maintains the park and preserves it as a local recreation area.

The motherhouse of the St. Mary of the Angels Convent was built in 1928 and expanded until 1956. In 2002 it was entered on the National Register of Historic Places and has housed a retirement home since 2004. However, it no longer belongs to the park.

Originally the floodplain was called Williamsville Glen .

Facilities

Amherst State Park is located on Ellicott Creek and has a network of hiking and biking trails. The main entrance is at 400 Mill Street, Williamsville. An interest group takes care of the design of the park. A "millstone garden" is to be created and there is a "memorial", a wall on which people can have their names put in memory.
